Welcome Father Joseph Gill!

The weekend of September 9 & 10 we officially welcomed Father Joseph Gill to Holy Spirit Parish.

This brief biography written for us by Father Gill appeared in the bulletin that weekend. It gives insight into the priest and the man.

In addition, we’ve inserted some pictures of this talented and faithful young priest.

Welcome Father Joseph

and know that we will keep you in our prayers.

I suppose my story is less of a vocation story and more of a love affair. Not to sound scandalous, but I am a priest because I fell in love…with God. I am originally from Maryland, the oldest of five children – born into a good, solid Catholic family – Mass every Sunday, a weekly Rosary, and daily devotions. Like many boys, I used to play Mass as a little kid, using grape juice and crackers! (Signs of things to come?). But for most of my early years, though, my faith in God was not the center of my life. I was far more interested in baseball, music, and girls than with the Lord!

I became serious about my faith as a teenager through a variety of experiences. When I was fourteen, I had the opportunity to go to Rome on a pilgrimage – what an experience! For the first time, I saw how universal and historical the Church was. I remember standing in the Coliseum, realizing that over 10,000 people shed their blood for Jesus on that very spot – why did I not take my faith more seriously? And to consider the great basilicas and works of art like the Sistine Chapel that people created over centuries, all for the glory of God – it made me reflect on my life and think,
“What can I do with my life to glorify God?”

The next year, my parish in Maryland began Perpetual Adoration, and my family signed up for an hour each week. My parents invited me to go, and reluctantly I agreed. But spending an hour each week in Jesus’ presence in the Blessed Sacrament helped me to deeply experience God’s personal, passionate love for me. When faced with such a love, a love that would spur our God to become man and die on a Cross and then give His Flesh in the Eucharist, I began to realize that my life had to be about Him, and not about me.

Since that time, I have sought to serve Him with my entire life. I became a seminarian right out of high school, attending Franciscan University of Steubenville for undergrad and Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland for my theology. I was blessed to be ordained in 2013 for the Diocese of
Bridgeport, serving at St. Mary’s in Bethel, St. Mary’s/St.Benedict’s in Stamford, and now at Trinity Catholic High School/Holy Spirit Parish.

Fr Gill with his bandI am still passionate about baseball and music (I actually play guitar & keyboard in a Christian rock band which has produced three CDs of Christian music!), but most of all I am passionate about bringing souls to Heaven. I look forward to doing just that – through God’s grace and the power of the Spirit – right here in North Stamford through my ministry here at Holy Spirit.
